There are times when the need before us seems much greater than anything we have to offer. We may feel short on time, energy, money, patience, or faith. The disciples felt that same helplessness when thousands of hungry people gathered in a remote place. They saw the size of the crowd, counted five loaves and two fish, and knew their resources couldn’t meet the need.

Jesus didn’t ask the disciples to deny their limitations or produce a miracle on their own. He simply told them to bring what they had to Him. In His hands, the small meal became enough to feed everyone, with twelve baskets left over. The miracle wasn’t that the disciples suddenly became capable of meeting every need. The miracle was that Jesus was enough.

The feeding of the crowd also points us toward Holy Communion. Jesus took the bread, gave thanks, broke it, and gave it to His disciples. At Christ’s table, we come with empty hands, not because we’re worthy or self-sufficient, but because we need His grace. The bread and cup remind us that Christ gave Himself for us and continues to nourish us with forgiveness, mercy, and hope.

After Christ feeds us, He sends us to share what He places in our hands. We may not be able to solve every problem, but we can respond to the need before us with compassion. A meal, a prayer, a visit, a gift, or a listening ear can become part of God’s work. What looks insufficient in our hands becomes abundance in the hands of Jesus.
